Male Breast enlargement; Gynaecomastia
The male breast (s) can enlarge at any time after adolescence, often for reasons unknown.
This can cause pain, swelling and embarrassment if it progresses.
Recognised causes of gynaecomastia include
the use of anabolic steroids by body builders; drugs used
to treat heart failure and prostate cancer; female sex
hormones; and rarely, hormone secreting tumours of
the testis. It is particularly common in older, overweight
men.
Treatments
These are rarely entirely satisfactory. In cases of mild to moderate enlargement, the condition is often self limiting over a period of a few months.
In cases of marked enlargement, treatments include liposuction or removal of the breast tissue entirely while preserving the nipple, a procedure known as subcutaneous mastectomy.
The results of surgery are often unsatisfactory,
with a delicate balance between the appearance of enlarged
breasts and post operative scarring. We will be pleased
to discuss with you individually the pros and cons of surgery
after assessment.
